My name is Madelyn Purcell and I am a graphic designer and self taught craft artist. If you would have told me 10 years ago this is what I would be doing I would have called you absurd. I went to college for a few years working towards my biology degree, all I found out is that was something I didn’t want to do.
I love being creative, it allows me to be the best version of myself. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that severely limited my ability to maintain a normal 9-5 job. I have worked in a salon on and off for 10 years, I was very comfortable working in salons and running their websites and social media. Being diagnosed and having to leave my job left me scared, vulnerable, and not sure what direction my life was going to go.
I spent a few years in my early 20s working for a company that taught me the fundamentals of graphic design and web design. I fell in love with what I was doing, and the process of graphic designing. My family was filled with artists of different kinds and when I was younger I felt like the artistic ability simply skipped a generation. Graphic design takes a different approach to art, it uses math as a ways to make and perfect your art. My brain works and functions in a logical way and graphic design to me is the way I can combine art with the logic of math.
This summer I bought a few things from our local arts and crafts store and started making a few crafts. This was more therapeutical than anything, I just wanted something to keep me busy during the day. I started making paper crafts, I enjoyed working with my hands but found it difficult to make the shapes I needed. I purchased a Silhouette cutting machine and everything completely changed. The silhouette allowed me to graphically design any project I want, then turn it into a physical piece of art.
This has been the most rewarding job I have ever had.
Small businesses are what keep this country wonderful, having an item that someone took time and effort to make. Thank you for supporting my small business and our family.
